Being a responsible citizen means not only exercising one's rights but also fulfilling one's duties and responsibilities towards society and the nation.
What are Citizen Duties?
Every citizen has rights as a participant in the system of governance. At the same time, every citizen has a responsibility to fulfil duties towards society and the nation. These duties and responsibilities are known as citizen duties.
Article 51A of the Constitution of India
Fundamental Duties of Citizens
- Preserve the historical, cultural and national heritage of the country.
- Protect the environment, forests, wildlife and natural resources.
- Respect and protect the dignity and rights of women.
- Promote scientific temper and oppose superstition and practices that undermine rational thinking.
- Promote religious harmony, social unity and fraternity.
- Uphold the unity and integrity of the nation.
- Be prepared to render national service whenever required.
Democratic Participation
- Participate actively in Grama Sabha meetings.
- Take part in local self-government activities.
- Cooperate in planning, implementation and evaluation of development programmes.
Economic Responsibilities
- Pay taxes and other statutory dues promptly and correctly.
- Help prevent tax evasion and other financial irregularities.
- Support legitimate development activities in the local community.
Cleanliness and Public Health
- Do not dispose of waste in public places.
- Cooperate with sanitation and waste-management activities.
- Avoid activities that cause public nuisance or affect public health.
Environmental Protection
- Protect natural resources and the local environment.
- Participate in environmental awareness and conservation activities.
- Support measures that maintain ecological balance.
Social Responsibility
- Cooperate with social audit and public accountability mechanisms.
- Strengthen social harmony and community solidarity.
- Oppose communalism, discrimination and divisive practices.
Prevention of Corruption and Maladministration
- Remain vigilant against corruption and misuse of public authority.
- Report illegal activities and serious irregularities to the appropriate authorities.
Social Protection
- Support efforts against alcoholism and substance abuse.
- Help prevent dowry-related practices, violence against women and child labour.
- Respect and protect the rights and dignity of disadvantaged and vulnerable sections of society.
Responsible Care of Domestic Animals
- Obtain the required licence for keeping domestic animals, wherever applicable.
- Ensure timely vaccination and appropriate care of animals.
- Take necessary measures to protect public health and prevent public nuisance.
Respect for Law
- Follow applicable laws, rules and regulations.
- Do not assist or encourage unlawful activities.
- Cooperate in maintaining public peace and order.
Equality and Justice
- Respect equality between women and men.
- Promote fairness, dignity and equal treatment in society.
Panchayati Raj System
Every citizen residing within the Grama Panchayat area has a responsibility to actively participate in strengthening democratic local governance and to contribute towards cleanliness, environmental protection, social justice and public peace.
